This product is a shield for Arduino UNO, based on the ESP8266 chip. This integrated circuit offers the possibility for processing and WiFi communication, at 2.4 GHz frequency, according to the 802.11 protocol.

For the communication with ESP8266 you have 2 possibilities:

1. Using the 90 degrees oriented pins for direct serial communication. For this, you will need a USB - UART converter with 3.3V logic level. Also, if you want to rewrite the firmware, this is the method to use.
2. Using the serial pins of the Arduino, after configuring the switches. In this working mode, Arduino will communicate only with ESP8266, and not with the computer.

Switches configuration

1. P1 and P2 buttons in UP position and the P3 and P4 in DOWN position: ESP8266 will talk to the Arduino UNO using the serial interface.
2. P1 and P2 buttons in DOWN position and the P3 and P4 in UP position: ESP8266 will enter in a state for rewriting the firmware after the press of the RESET button. P3 button connects the pin necessary to write the firmware and the P4 button lights up the indicator LED for this mode.
3. All the buttons in the DOWN position: the ESP8266 works independently.
