Description

This WS2812 LED Ring contains 16 addressable 5050 RGB LEDs and can be programmed from the microcontroller. The LED ring can be used in your decorative designs. It can provide high-power illumination required in machine vision, biomedical, fluorescence, and strobing applications.

It only needs 3 connections for 16 LEDs (VCC, GND, and D - data pin). Data for LEDs is sent in serial, 24 bit for each LED, representing 8 bit for colors, in the order of GRB.

Specifications

  • Supply voltage:5 V (VCC and VDD)
  • Current consumed by LEDs: max 20mA / LED
  • LED Voltage Drop: R: 1.8 V to 2.2 V, G: 3.0 V to 3.2 V, B: 3.2 V to 3.4 V
  • LED Brightness: R: 550 to 700 mcd, G: 1100 to 1400 mcd, B: 200 to 400 mcd
  • 8-bit resolution / color
  • Data transmission speed of up to 800Kbps

For controlling the LED Ring you can check the attached datasheet, but you can also check the next example created with the development board compatible with Arduino Uno.

For the WS2812 LED Ring you need only 3 pins from the development board: 5V, GND and one digital pin for controlling the LEDs. You can visualise the the connections in the scheme below:

Also, we will use a 330 Ω resistor (you can also use a 220 Ω resistor or 470 Ω resistor) for reducing the noise on that line.

In the DOWNLOAD section you will find the code for this project (LED_Ring.ino), and this code will turn on each LED Red, Green and then Blue. More information can be found in the code, as comments. Before uploading the code, you have to install the FastLED.h library, and for this you have to go in Arduino IDE>Sketch>Include Library>Manage Libraries..., search for FastLED and click on Install.

Now, you can Upload the code and observe the LEDs light up.
